Fuel Dilution

Fuel Dilution

ASTM method - D92

This test measures the amount of fuel present in an engine oil sample.

Operating Principle

This test takes a portion of used engine oil and using an instrument called a gas chromatograph, measures the amount of fuel contained in the sample by comparing carbon chain length.

Significance

A high amount of fuel in the oil causes degradation and a loss of viscosity. Loss of viscosity can increase wear rates of critical parts. High fuel dilution may also indicate mechanical issues.

Application

All engine oils that are used to lubricant gasoline and diesel engines.
