Measures the acidity of a lubricant.
A sample of known weight in titration solvent is titrated with a potassium hydroxide solution to a definite end point.
Organic acids, a by-product of oil oxidation, degrade oil properties and lead to corrrosion of the internal components. The Acid Number is lowest as a virgin oil and can gradually increase with use. High acid levels are typically caused by oil oxidation.
All lubricating systems where extended drain intervals are considered. Limited applications for combustion engines.
